Developing Deep Mathematical Learning in Early Years

The importance of language as an indicator of a child’s educational success has been long established by ongoing language-based projects. This work seeks to build on some of the research around the effective use of language to support practitioners with establishing effective mathematical discourse.

This Work Group will focus on the development of mathematical language, identifying best practice in this aspect by promoting a variety in language use and how language structures can be utilised to elicit deeper thinking.

The three day course, with days spread across the year, are aimed at School based practitioners leading the planning and provision of mathematics in Early Years (i.e. Nursery and/or Reception), particularly those who are not EYFS specialists.

Of the three days, two days will be face-to-face training and one day will provide the opportunity to work with colleagues in other settings. There will also be gap tasks between them to embed.

Dates: Friday 9th Feb, March/April TBA (visits to settings) and Friday 18th May

Time: 9:00am – 4:00pm

Mindfulness Living - 8 week course

By completing this 8-week mindfulness based living course you will be able to develop an in-depth personal experience of mindfulness which will equip you with a range of inner resources to cope with challenges in every-day life. Studies have highlighted numerous benefits of taking part in the course such as:

  • Increased self-confidence
  • Greater capacity for relaxation
  • Improved sleep patterns
  • More enthusiasm for life
  • Developing capacity to handle stressful situations
  • Help with the management of chronic pain
  • Increased capacity in working memory

 

The curriculum for this 8-week course would run as follows:

Introductory session – Friday 9th February: introduction to the course what is mindfulness and why practice it? (one hour session)

Week 1 – Thursday 15th February: Start where we are

Week 2 – Thursday 22nd February: The body as a place to stay present

Week 3 – Thursday 1st March:  Introducing Mindfulness Support

Week 4 – Thursday 8th March: Working with distraction

Week 5 – Thursday15th March: Exploring the undercurrent

Week 6 –  Friday 23rd March: Attitude of the observer

Week 7 – Thursday 29th March: Self-Acceptance

Week 8 – Thursday 5th April: A mindfulness based life

There is a half day of silent practice (Sunday 25th March)

 

Sessions are 1hr 30 mins – 2hrs max

Annual Conference - Captivate to Communicate

Acorns 2018 Annual Conference will focus on captivating children to enhance their speech, language and communication skills

Our keynote speaker, Kym Scott will help us to explore the key features of quality interactions along with workshops offering practical ways to create enabling environments that are communication friendly.
